Entrepreneurs’ Role in Health Promotion and Prevention of Occupational Injuries of Illnesses
Abstract
Research Objectives
The research objectives are:
- To study the general data of entrepreneurs and employees,
- To study the entrepreneur’s roles in health promotion and prevention of
Occupational injuries or illnesses of employees:
- To study the planning and policy setting of employee protection in work-related injuries or illness and
- To study entrepreneurs’ and employees’ need for help from the Benefits Section of Workmen’s Compensation Fund (WCF) in the province.
Six hundred samples were interviewed, 100 of which were entrepreneurs, and 500 of which were employees in type of business manufacturing trades and services located in ChiagMai, Lampang and Lamphun provinces. Systematic random sampling and stratified random sampling were used to compile the lists of entrepreneurs and employees for this interview. The data was initially gathered by designing questionnaires and conducting interviews with both entrepreneurs and employees. Percentage and Chi-Square test statistical analysis were used to calculate the data. Statistical analysis was also conducted using a micro computer. A written final report describes the findings.
Research Findings
The entrepreneurs’ roles in health promotion and prevention of occupational injuries or illness of employees are as follows:
- In promotion; to set a clear safety policy, to have both employers and employees realize the importance of the policy, to persuade responsibility and cooperation between employers and employees, to analyze the cause of accidents and work-related illnesses for future prevention, to collect and report statistics of accidents and employee illnesses.
- In prevention; to train the executives, the practitioners, and the leader of workers in safety prevention, to check the environment in the office machines and tools before working and suggest that protective materials are given to employees before beginning work, to assess the policy and set safety standards according to regulations.
The highest percentage of serious work-related injuries are : being wounded by sharp tools and falls to the ground. Stress and backaches cause most of the employees’ illnesses.
There are many definite plans and procedures to help prevent work- related injuries and occupational illnesses such as clean workplaces, adequate illumination, and appropriate air ventilation. Companies provide advisors and hand-books to assist the employees in using machines, tools, and equipments. Additionally, employees are allowed a holiday and intervals of rest under the Labour Protection Act.
Additional help from the benefits section of the Workmen’s Compensation Fund in the province is needed. The entrepreneurs need advice guideline in following to perform properly. The employees need to get their compensation benefits back from benefits section by mailing.
